What is an Electrocardiogram?

An electrocardiogram (ECG) test is a simple, painless way to detect if your heart’s electrical activity and rhythm are normal. The test records the electrical activity of your heart through electrodes attached to your skin. This can help identify any problems with your heart’s rhythm and structure, such as arrhythmias or an enlarged heart. An ECG can also show if you have had a previous heart attack and how severe it was.

At the Cardiology Center of Acadiana, expect your ECG to be performed in an efficient and professional manner. Our trained cardiology team will use the latest technology and equipment to perform your test, ensuring that the results are accurate and reliable. We understand that your time is valuable, so we strive to make sure the entire process, from beginning to end, is as smooth and stress-free as possible.w

Important Information to Know About an Electrocardiogram

Here is some important information you should know about electrocardiograms:

Before the Procedure

There is no special preparation required before a standard electrocardiogram, However, make sure to inform your doctor of any medications you are currently taking, as these may interfere with the accuracy of the reading.

During the Procedure

The test is typically a short process that takes about 10 minutes. You’ll be connected to an ECG machine with electrodes placed on your chest, arms, and legs. During the test, you will be asked to remain still and breathe normally while the machine records your heart’s electrical activity.

After the Procedure

There is no downtime following the procedure, and you will be able to return to your normal activities. The testing results are usually available within a few days and are interpreted by our board-certified cardiologist. If the results are unclear or show abnormalities, we may order additional tests, such as a Holter monitor, to get more detailed information.

Who Might Need an Electrocardiogram?

You may need to schedule an electrocardiogram (EKG) if you’re experiencing certain symptoms that could indicate heart disease. Typically, a doctor will recommend an EKG if you are experiencing symptoms, such as chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, palpitations, or unexplained fainting.
