What is Exercise Stress Test?
An exercise stress test, also known as a treadmill or exercise ECG, is one of the most effective ways to assess your cardiovascular health. This test involves walking on a treadmill while your heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation levels are monitored. The results of the exercise stress test can help your doctor determine whether you have any underlying cardiovascular conditions, as well as provide information about your overall fitness level.
At the Cardiology Center of Acadiana, expect your exercise stress test to be done with state-of-the-art equipment and advanced interpretation techniques. We use the latest technology to ensure precise measurements of your heart’s electrical activity, stress levels, and oxygen levels during exercise. Our seasoned cardiologist will then use the results of the test to develop an individualized plan that lets you achieve optimal health.
Important Information to Know About an Exercise Stress Test
Here is some important information you need to know about exercise stress tests:
Before the Procedure
Our cardiologist may ask you to avoid taking certain medications or supplements a few days before the test as they can affect your results. We may also ask you to stop eating or drinking anything for 8 hours before the test.
During the Procedure
During the exercise stress test, you’ll be asked to walk on a treadmill or bike. The speed and incline may gradually increase as the test progresses, to see how your heart works when it’s under stress. Your heart rhythm, breathing rate, and blood pressure will also be monitored throughout the test.
After the Procedure
Our cardiologist will look at the results of your exercise stress test to determine how well your heart is functioning. Depending on the results, we may suggest further tests or treatments and recommend lifestyle changes to improve your overall heart health.

Exercise stress testing might be the right procedure for you if:
- You notice any chest pain or shortness of breath
- You have a history of heart attack
- You have high blood pressure or diabetes
